Rhino Turkey Chokes

Rhino introduced the first ported Turkey Choke into the market in 1995.  Our Patented design delivers the best pattern density possible by a choke by striping the wad from the shot and shortening the shot stream, delivering more pellets to the turkey’s head at one time, plus reducing felt recoil and muzzle jump!

*This choke tube is designed to produce some unbelievable patterns!  20 yard patterns measure approximately 8 to 10” in diameter and pattern 100% in that circumference.  50 yard patterns can be achieved with correct shot size producing 90% patterns in a 28” diameter.

*We can manufacture a turkey hunting choke for your needs. With loads that are available today in heavy shot, we are producing remarkable patterns at the 70 yard mark that are above 80%.

*These choke tubes are manufactured of 174 stainless steel and are hand lapped to a zero micron finish on the inside (giving them a mirror finish).  The reason behind polishing the inside of the choke tube is to reduce plastic build-up and shot deformation.  These choke tubes are then brown acid washed resulting in a brown, no-glare, no-shine finish.

*The porting on these chokes covers the entire 360 degrees.  The holes are designed as wad strippers.  This design allows the shot stream to develop and maintain itself with zero interruption and interference from the wad, therefore producing 33% more consistent and more uniform than any other choke.  The by-product of the porting reduces felt recoil by as much as 10% aiding in reduction of recoil in the 3” and 3½” magnum shells where reduction of recoil is most necessary.  Since you are not exceeding 2000 feet per second this porting will not be as loud as a muzzle break on a rifle.  It will be no louder than a standard shotgun with or without porting.

Please keep in mind the a choke tube can only take the shotgun so far.  The condition of the barrel will hinder the performance of your choke if it is not in it’s best condition.   There are several factors which influence your guns’ performance:

  • #1     The first thing to consider is the point of impact of the shotgun.  If it is not correct, there are several options:  Adjustable fiber optics or mounting a scope can be done by you.  Rhino charges $85 to adjust the point of impact.

  • #2     Rhino believes that lengthening and polishing the forcing cone to 2” creates less shot deformation.  This is a critical factor since the charge generates it’s velocity in this area.  If you force the load through a very short, abrupt area (forcing cone), there is quite a lot of ‘recoil’ produced.  By cutting and polishing this transition point  lengthening and polishing the forcing cone, you make a much more gradual entrance into the integral part of the barrel which lessens the recoil and diminishes shot deformation.  Thus a better pattern by as much as 20%.    Rhino charges $70 per barrel for this.

  • #3     The internal condition of the barrel should be as slick as possible allowing the load to go down the barrel with minimal amount of disruption.  If there are any scratches or imperfections they should be removed by polishing the barrel.  This will make your barrel shoot 8 to 10% better.  Again, the theory is to have nothing interfere with the load as it develops down the barrel.  Any interference will cause ‘flyers’ and holes in the pattern.  Remember how small a turkey’s head is and you don’t want to miss.  Rhino charges $55 to polish most barrels.

  • #4     The condition of your choke is absolutely critical.  First it must be clean.  If you only get one shot, make it your best!   Rhino polishes the internal wall of our ported chokes to eliminate drag and build-up inside the choke tube. Non polished choke tubes create build-up inside which produce erratic patterns.  Since the choke is your last change to control the pattern, Rhino eliminates final shot deformation by removing all tooling marks.  This allows the load to pass through the choke and out of the barrel undisturbed, creating that shorter shot stream which delivers a tremendous impact because it is a short shot stream.

The price of our ported patented turkey chokes follow on the chart below.

  • #5  If you wish your shotgun to perform 40+ yards, porting the barrel will vent the gases in front and behind the load.  This is the best way to control the gasses that disrupt patterns.  Our goal is to eliminate everything which will deform the shot.  We want there to be NO resistance to the load as it exits the barrel insuring the best pattern density at the target area.

Also, please consider that no two turkey guns are completely alike.  The harmonics of each barrel will cause it to perform differently.  This is why you and your friend may have the same gun, but yours shoots better than his.  Each shotgun can be made to be your ‘Ultimate Turkey Gun’ with a little work!

The following is a brief chart of recommended sizes for lead (Lead =Winchester Supreme), Hevi Shot (Hevi)  and the Nitro Company load for Hevi Shot (Hevi-Nitro)  This is only a guideline and some guns require further testing to ‘fine tune.’
